Brands Gone Bad was created by David Styler as a social experiment after being laid off in 2020 amid the pandemic. The experiment? Create an Instagram page featuring original content in the form of parodies, beginning with 0 followers with the goal of obtaining 10,000 within a year's time.
It surprised him more than anyone when that actually happened. In just under two years, minus a few months in which he worked on other projects, he was humbled and elated to gain over 35,000 followers.
He was fortunate enough to have some of his memes shared by Public Enemy, Cheech & Chong, Trashcan Paul, FourTwenty, and Worst Buy to name a few.
Being warned repeatedly of violating Instagram's community guidelines, they finally gave him the boot after continually citing "sale of illegal or regulated goods".
For the record, Styler (as his friends call him) never sold, bought, solicited, offered nor inquired about any illegal or regulated goods in his memes, post captions, comments, or private messages. He politely explained this to them, but alas it fell on deaf ears.
He is currently working as a freelance designer, art director, and copywriter and just finished writing his first full-length spec screenplay. You can view some of his professional work on his personal website here: www.davestyler.com
